The Township of Selwyn is undertaking a watermain replacement project along Strickland Street in Lakefield. The work is scheduled to begin in the Spring 2024 and will take place along Strickland Street from Queen Street to Prospect Street, and include a portion of Prospect Street.

The scope of this project is to install new underground watermain infrastructure, and replace portions of sidewalks and curbs that are ripped up as a result of the construction.

Accurex Inc. will be completing the construction and DM Wills is the engineering firm overseeing the construction. The construction work consists of:

  • The installation of a new 200mm watermain along Strickland Street from Queen to Prospect, including a portion of Prospect Street.
  • New 19mm copper services to be installed to property line for all connecting properties.
  • New concrete curb and asphalt boulevard and replacement of portions of sidewalk.
  • New asphalt roadway.
  • Surface restoration for the planned external areas of impact.
  • New frame and grates for existing sanitary and storm structures as lid adjustments will be required for surface works.
  • Reconstruction of an overland flow route for stormwater.

The Township of Selwyn has received over $3 million combined from both the federal and provincial governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s (ICIP) Green Infrastructure Stream fund to support upgrades at the Lakefield Water Treatment Plant, the recommissioning of the Lakefield Standpipe and the replacement of water mains under Strickland Street and Prospect Street in the Village of Lakefield to meet current health and safety standards, as well as preventative maintenance.

The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) is delivered through bilateral agreements between Infrastructure Canada and each of the provinces and territories, delivering over $33 billion in funding under the program. The program provides long-term, stable funding delivered by Infrastructure Canada to help communities reduce air and water pollution, provide clean water, increase resilience to climate change and create a clean-growth economy; build strong, dynamic, and inclusive communities; and ensure Canadian families have access to modern, reliable services that improve their quality of life.
