The Township of Selwyn is currently undertaking a reconstruction project along Water Street in Lakefield. Work is scheduled to start in the Spring of 2022, ending in Fall 2024.

The scope of this project is to install new underground infrastructure (storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and watermain), new sidewalks, and curbs, and finally construct a new roadway.

Accurex Inc. will be completing the construction and DM Wills is the engineering firm overseeing the construction. The construction is described below including the proposed phasing:

The general goals of this project are to:

  • Replace aging underground and aboveground infrastructure
  • Improve traffic flow at the Water Street/King Street and Water Street/Reid Street intersections by introducing three-way stops
  • Improve pedestrian facilities
  • Improve parking facilities
  • Improve public boat launch

Additional Project Details

  • Traffic Calming - adding three-way stops at the intersections of King and Reid Streets to calm traffic and improve pedestrian crossings.
  • Christ Church Museum:
    • No works planned beyond road reconstruction to avoid any disturbance of the pioneer cemetery.
    • Active construction adjacent to the Christ Church area will start on April 25th, 2022, and will be overseen by a licensed archeologist.
  • Improved Parking Facilities - boat launch and parking area at the bridge, including designated accessible parking. Adding lay-by parking beside St. Paul’s Church.
  • Sidewalks – new sidewalk installed adjacent to the Lakefield Condominiums, extending from where it ends at Concession Street to King Street and replacement of existing sidewalk.
  • Bike lane – share the road will be implemented for cyclists. Space limitations meant that a dedicated bike lane could not be installed.
  • Boat launch:
    • Improvements to the boat launch, including hard surface launch area.
    • Boat launch will be closed during active construction during phase 1 (2022) – signage will be posted to advise of closures.

Township staff met on-site with staff from both Accurex Inc. (construction company) and DM Wills (engineering firm) and it was determined that the boat launch is not slippery when dry or slightly damp. Neither is the launch slippery when there are no stones or ice on its surface.

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact the Manager of Recreation Services - Mike Richardson at 705-292-9507 ext. 241 or email mrichardson@selwyntownship.ca.

We have not noticed slipperiness on the launch nor had that feedback yet. We will review this and ensure there are no issues.

The parking space depths were reduced after Otonabee Conservation and Parks Canada provided input regarding trailers destroying the shoreline, and hanging over and into the water. The Otonabee River is the drinking water source for the Township and Peterborough and is regulated under the Source Water Protection Act, and so it must be carefully protected. The intention is to only have vehicles park in the lot and trailers and vehicles park at the Lakefield-Smith Community Centre parking lot down the road.
